WHS PEER TUTOR
|
CAREERS WITH CHILDREN INTERNSHIP (2016-2017) |
I was able to learn how to communicate with students and collaborate with others much more through this experience. Before I was a an after school peer tutor, I did not have the skills to reach out to others first. However, if I was going to have my mind set towards becoming a helpful peer tutor, I would eventually have to learn how to reach out to others first. I had to pull myself together in order to do so and once I did, I realized how rewarding it is to help others with their homework problems. Communication was the key in order to be a helpful peer. tutor. With the communication skills that I had developed through this after school program, I was able to understand the needs of students. Specifically, I was able to understand the needs of those students who had been referred to after school tutoring. Now, when someone is REQUIRED to go someplace they do not want to go to, they often have an attitude. But, as a peer tutor, it is your job to have those students on track for an proficient academic record. Eventually, as I had worked with those students day by day, one on one, I had seen a change of attitude towards those students. They appeared to enjoy their time at the tutoring center. Knowing and seeing this change was a blissful experience.

Being an intern for preschoolers has taught me many valuable lessons. There are actually many skills that are needed in order to work with kids. One skill I had found difficult gaining is communication. Communicating with preschoolers is very different from communicating with adults and peers. I learned that many preschoolers have limited vocabulary. As an older figure, I had to adjust my vocabulary in order for them to understand what I was trying to tell them. However, through time, I was able to learn how to adjust to such circumstances.
